Chuck Wythe

Chuck Wythe
Chief Executive Officer

Mr. Chuck Wythe, with two decades of experience in the military and in senior executive roles, heads the current executive team. Since its founding, Chuck has led the organization through its start-up phase, its first liquidity event, its rapid growth phase (including major diversification), two acquisitions, and its first forays into international markets. Over the past decade, he has built an organization from a small, U.S.-only, niche business into its current five-business line, multimarket, multidiscipline, 100-person operation with a product presence in 14 countries. Under his leadership, shareholders who entered as recently as 2006 have seen a 15x growth in shareholder value. In an industry where market leadership is typically found in the realms of the many decades-old enterprises, Chuck has surprised many by repeatedly producing innovations and breakout wins. It is Chuck who has led this team, produced these successes, and made VSD a “company to watch” among the large U.S. Government contractors and professional service communities.

Chuck’s core competencies are organization building, business development, and hands-on leadership. Since the early days of his U.S. Navy career, he excelled in bringing together different teams and different organizations into a cohesive, functioning unit. As an integrator, it is his analytical aptitude, his talent for rapidly assessing the intricacies of a situation, and his ability to perceive key elements of individual agendas that allow him to excel. As an organization builder and producer, he commands a deep technical understanding of the subject matter areas as well as an intuitive understanding of how to get the most out of individuals and teams. This is a talent he has developed, both formally and informally, through the hundreds of performance improvement, manpower planning, and competency training projects he has been involved with.

Chuck’s insights into market direction have also served the company well. As a strategist and visionary, it was his keen perception of global demand growth, new technology trends, and international defense buildup that helped guide the company into its current, enviable market and competitive position. He has been the leader at the helm through many business transformation initiatives, including the sale of a majority stake to Q.E.D. Systems, Inc. (Q.E.D.), the transformation into a simulation-centric producer, the acquisition of the Satellite Communications business line and DTM Global, and the current Middle Eastern strategic growth initiative.

His strength in business development stems from his exceptional ability to build rapport and earn individual trust. It is these personal qualities that have, since the firm’s inception, become key building blocks of the VSD corporate DNA. On a day-to-day basis, Chuck engages with the business development team—as a coach and peer—to affect revenue growth. As a salesman, he excels in both relationship-based selling and provocative selling; both of which have led to six-, seven-, and eight-figure contract wins. Chuck attributes his success to “his commercial insights, his people reading, and his teaching ability” that have together set VSD and its teams on their current strategic growth path. He is known among his staff, his business partners, and the firm’s clientele as a hands-on, competent, and trustworthy leader.

Originally a cofounder of Ventures in Strategic Design in January of 2001, Chuck served as the president and CEO before selling a majority stake in the company to Q.E.D. in March of 2006. Since that time, Chuck has led VSD as its CEO with full profit and loss as well as full organization, business, market, and people performance responsibility. Chuck has extensive experience in the fields of manpower, computer-based training, performance improvement, business analysis and consulting, and organizational development. His knowledge and expertise is often requested and exhibited through conferences, speaking engagements, and workshops, such as when he served on a panel in 2010 at the 62nd Virginia Conference on World Trade. Prior to establishing VSD, Chuck worked as a project manager with BAE Systems from 1996 through 2001. During his tenure at BAE, he held multiple positions associated with Naval Air Warfare Center Aircraft Division (NAWCAD)-sponsored communication suites aboard various United States Navy vessels and acted as a government liaison on behalf of BAE. Before joining BAE, he served in the United States Navy, during which time he was the recipient of multiple commendations and medals, including two Navy Achievement Medals. He is a member of the American Society of Naval Engineers, the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, Veterans of Foreign Wars, and the Hampton Roads Chamber of Commerce. He is a strong advocate for our community and supports company-wide participation in nonprofit education and community development programs.
